I have become tired of negotiating with travel companies for regional pay differences. I am the same person no matter where I work. So I have set a rate for hourly pay, per diem (food allowance), travel, car, and housing into one lump sum. The lump sum actually equates to my hourly rate at time and one half (overtime rate). The hourly rate is adjusted for benefits since I am paid 1099.
I live in a Fifth wheel trailer and make all my own arrangements for getting to and from assignment, place to stay, etc. The companies just find the work and pay me. I am signed up with 5 companies to keep me going.
So, I pocket the difference when I find cheaper expenses. I haven't been in the red with this method. And I still get call pay, callbacks and overtime hours on top of the lump sum.
What do some of you other experienced travel techs do to deal with this? What number do you feel is a satisfactory lump sum rate? Posts:

SmartThat's a great way to do pay, especially when you've got an RV. I, too, decided a while back that I was going to only take a certain higher pay scale for hourly, per diem, and car allowance and it has worked well for me also. I might lower it by $1/hr just to close a deal, but other than that it's take it or leave it. I'm sceptical on the claims from temp agencies that they are getting really different pays based on the locations. Housing prices may go up, but unless a person is in a very expensive city it shouldn't affect the pay in any significant way. When push comes to shove, I've gotten my pay scale whether I'm in a podunk, backwater burg or a huge city. I think more temp techs ought to set a pay scale like you're doing; if enough people did it, everyones pay would probably increase. Posts:

Dunno about that, I only use agencies that take out my fed and state taxes. Posts:
